Wherever a government body publishes vehicle data — the DVLA and DVSA in the UK, NHTSA in the US, and their counterparts across the EU — that's where EVMetricsOBD looks first. These are the same authoritative records a dealer or inspector relies on, and they're free to access: no subscription markup, no reseller in the middle. Only when an official source is temporarily unavailable, or simply doesn't publish a field for your vehicle, does the app quietly fill the gap from a vetted commercial provider — clearly labelled, and never as a substitute for the real record.

Free, public data straight from the federal safety regulator
VIN Decode
Resolves any 17-character VIN to year, make, model, trim, plant country, engine type and GVWR. This data is embedded in every diagnostic report generated by the app. Available on all OBD-connected vehicles globally.
Safety Recall Lookup
Open recall campaigns surfaced for the decoded VIN. Displayed alongside DTC scan results so active recalls are visible in context — a critical step for pre-purchase inspections and warranty work.

Vehicle Enquiry Service (VES)
Resolves a UK registration plate to tax status, MOT expiry, SORN status, CO₂ emissions, fuel type, first registration date, engine size, colour and V5C date. The primary "is this car road-legal?" check for any UK pre-purchase inspection.
MOT History API
Full MOT test history for any UK vehicle: pass/fail, odometer readings at each test, every advisory note and every failure item with its DVSA category code. Essential for understanding a vehicle's maintenance history before purchase and for flagging recurring faults.
Safety Recall Lookup (UK)
UK recall data from DVSA vehicle recalls database. When a DTC scan or diagnostic report is generated, any open recall campaigns for the vehicle's VIN are surfaced as a priority alert.

Netherlands open-data API returns APK (periodic vehicle test) history, registration data, body type and fuel type for Dutch-registered plates. No authentication required — fully open government dataset.
Fahrzeugdaten (Vehicle Records)
German Federal Motor Transport Authority records for German-registered vehicles. Returns type-approval data, first registration and HU (Hauptuntersuchung) inspection status.
Données Véhicule (France)
French vehicle records via the national secure documents agency. Returns CT (contrôle technique) inspection history and registration data for French-registered plates.
When official records don't tell the whole story
Government databases don't cover everything — finance history, write-off status and resale valuations simply aren't published by any public body. For those, EVMetricsOBD brings in a small set of trusted specialist providers, clearly marked as such, so you get the fuller picture without ever mistaking a commercial estimate for an official record.

For older VINs or unusual trims where the standard decode comes back incomplete, a secondary lookup fills in the missing specification details — including EV-specific data like battery size and rated range.
